ADVANCED RECYCLING
_______________
The world needs more solutions – and ones that can be scaled quickly and economically.
When possible, plastic should be repurposed or reused. When it can’t be reused, it should be mechanically recycled.
For hard-to-recycle plastics that can’t be mechanically recycled, advanced recycling fills the gap to create a more circular economy.
Beyond Baytown, ExxonMobil expects to expand annual advanced recycling capacity to 500,000 metric tons (1 billion pounds) by year-end 2026 across multiple sites globally. We are assessing our existing manufacturing facilities in Baton Rouge, Beaumont and Joliet in the U.S., as well as Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Singapore.
ENVIRONMENT
Since 2002, the Beaumont complex has reduced overall emissions by approximately 70 percent and has invested over $1 billion on various environmental performance measures.
OUR IMPROVEMENT BY THE NUMBERS
600 TONS
Approximate annual reduction of nitrogen oxide emissions since the installation of three cogeneration units in 2005.
10,000 TONS
Approximate annual reduction of sulfur dioxide since the installation of the wet gas scrubber in 2005.
764,000 TONS
The approximate reduction of carbon dioxide since 2019 as a result of the refinery’s consistent efforts toward improving energy efficiency – a removal equal to a total of 166,000 cars from the road.
OUR INVESTMENT TO REDUCE EMISSIONS
Wet gas scrubber
Controls refinery flue gas emissions
from Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Units.
Reduced sulfur dioxide emissions by 10,000 tons per year since installation in 2005.
Cogeneration
Electricity generated from our cogeneration unit supplies electricity for more than 15,000 Beaumont homes.
Ability to provide power to the grid during/after weather events (i.e. freeze, storms) ~ 100k homes powered during Winter Storm Uri.
Our units have reduced nitrogen oxide emissions by approximately 600 tons per year since 2004.
