  • Why is it important?

This past November, Colorado voters soundly defeated Proposition 112, which would have effectively banned new oil and gas development in the state. But now anti-industry activists are working with the legislature to threaten Colorado’s $31 billion oil and gas industry.

A newly unveiled bill – SB 181 – picks up right where Prop 112 left off. If enacted into law, this bill would result in an immediate and indefinite statewide moratorium on new oil and gas development. The moratorium would only be lifted once multiple proposed rulemakings were completed, a process that could take years.

  • The bill would impose an immediate and indefinite statewide moratorium on new oil and gas development until all rulemakings are completed, which could take several years.
  • Oil and gas development is a $31 billion industry in Colorado, and generates $669 million per year for K-12 and higher education.
  • More than 232,000 jobs in Colorado are supported by oil and gas.
  • This bill would create a patchwork of unworkable and conflicting rules and regulations, opening up the potential for additional local bans on development.
  • The bill would remove scientific experts from the COGCC’s 9-person panel, specifically those trained in geology and engineering.
