Hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” is a major driver behind increased US oil and natural gas production and an advanced technology for safely producing affordable and reliable energy—in addition to making the US less dependent on foreign energy.
In fact, the industry has fracked thousands of oil and natural gas wells each year without incident. The robust technology and industry safety standards put in place, combined with strict federal and state regulations, ensure that operations are performed and managed effectively and that groundwater is protected.
But, some elected officials are attempting a dangerous shift away from this vital energy technology for producing natural gas and oil. It’s time to speak up and say that Fracking Works for US.
Some legislators at the state and federal level are considering a ban on fracking, but what does this mean for Texans? Here is what we know:
- Millions of Jobs Lost – Communities across the state may be severely impacted with an already strained job market. In fact, a ban on fracking would eliminate over 3.2 million jobs between 2021 and 2025 in Texas.
- Increased Cost of Living – The cost of living may increase by $7,280 for the average Texan through 2025 if a national ban were implemented in 2021.
- Decreased Household Income – Within 5 years, there may be a $794 billion decrease in household income in Texas.
- Low Income Families at Risk – Natural gas can help keep energy affordable, making it possible for low income families to be able to pay their energy bills. According to a study from the National Bureau of Economic Research, inexpensive heating reduces colder weather mortality.
- Increased Dependence on Foreign Energy – Fracking is a major reason for America going from a net importer to a net exporter of energy. With a ban on fracking, there will come an increased reliance on foreign supporters, making the country less energy secure.
