COMMUNITY IMPACT
The refinery is heavily invested in our neighboring communities and has historically remained a top contributor to United Way of Will County. In 2023, refinery employees volunteered more than 3,000 hours and contributed more than $100,000 to dozens of local organizations through the ExxonMobil Volunteer Involvement Program grants. These grants are awarded by ExxonMobil to local organizations where employees and/or retirees perform volunteer work.
SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT PRACTICES AND AWARDS
Safety is fundamental at the Joliet refinery, where we have a simple goal: “Nobody gets hurt.”
The Joliet refinery is also among the most energy-efficient refineries of its size in the country and is striving to be on par with European standards for energy efficiency.
Joliet also utilizes the Loss Prevention System, a behavior-based system that identifies and eliminates factors and behaviors that lead to loss (e.g., injuries, process safety and environmental incidents), and in 2008, the refinery installed a Wet Gas Scrubber that reduces sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from two main point sources by 97%.
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
The Joliet Refinery Fire Brigade comprises more than 100 employee volunteers who undergo continuous rigorous training to ensure world-class response capabilities. The refinery works and trains closely with the cities of Elwood and Joliet to coordinate mutual aid and off-site assistance, helping to safeguard our employees, contractors, neighbors and facilities. Our response teams routinely test emergency notification equipment and simulate emergency scenarios with city teams to ensure preparation and coordination.
