The benefits of oil and gas in New Mexico
New Mexico is one of the United States’ leading oil and gas producers, ranking 2nd in annual oil production and 3rd in annual natural gas production. With production concentrated in two areas—the Permian Basin in the southeast and the San Juan Basin in the northwest—the industry brought in more than $13 billion to New Mexico’s state and local government revenue in 2025.
- Oil and gas activity contributes nearly half of the critical funding for New Mexico public schools, infrastructure, health care and public safety in the state, accounting for more than 48% of the state’s General Fund revenue.
- The oil and gas industry provides more than $2 billion in public and higher education funding each year – that’s over 40% of education funding statewide.
- The energy industry provides local jobs and helps grow New Mexico’s economy. More than 100,000 New Mexicans work in the oil and gas industry, both directly and indirectly, supporting families, communities, and economic growth across the state.
- The oil and gas industry continues to innovate and develop new technologies to reduce emissions. In fact, ExxonMobil has installed continuous methane monitoring on all its key assets in New Mexico.
