Environmental stewardship

From our shareholders to our site leadership, to our individual employees, we truly want to be good stewards of our environment.

We’re constantly thinking about how we can operate cleaner and greener, and how we can do it responsibly and transparently. In 2023, we made some significant progress in these efforts.

• Flaring Down, Progress Up: We achieved a 56% reduction in hydrocarbon (HC) flaring at the Baytown Refinery from 2021 to 2023. This demonstrates our commitment to minimizing waste and improving operational efficiency.

•Fugitive Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions at the Baytown Chemical Plant have decreased by 10% since 2020. This ongoing effort minimizes leaks and promotes a safer work environment.

•Flaring Intensity on the Decline: Flaring and flaring intensity at the Baytown Olefins Plant witnessed an 11% reduction from 2021 to 2023.

We continuously work to reduce emissions. Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are emitted from vehicles, power plants small businesses and industry, and contribute to the formation of ground level ozone, or smog. For more than a decade, the ExxonMobil Baytown Area has been among the industry leaders in supporting and implementing emissions reduction technologies, such as leak detection.

Employing state-of-the art equipment provides the opportunity for improvements in both process safety and reduction of NOx and VOC emissions. This and other technology extend our audio, visual, and olfactory methods for leak detection, and allows us to identify leaks that would otherwise be undetectable.

Health & safety

Safety is a core value at ExxonMobil Baytown. We maintain a highly experienced team and a suite of resources to ensure we are the safest facility we can possibly be.

Leading in personnel safety

The Baytown Area Health and Safety Team supports each of the business teams to first understand the details of how work is executed in the field and then provide guidance and best practices on safety standards. BTA also implements programs to ensure our employees go home the same way they came to work, including regular medical reviews, PPE assessments, HAZMAT training, first aid training and CPR certifications.

Leading in process safety

The ExxonMobil Baytown facility was intentionally designed and built to include best-in-class systems. As technology continues to advance, our site teams are eager to assess how we can incorporate emerging innovations into our facility. Due to process safety initiatives currently in place, as well as plans we have for 2024, BTA is well-positioned to identify and address issues quickly at our site
