STEM education is the key to a stronger Mississippi

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of visiting an educational experience full of promise at the Jackson State University STEM summer camp focused on carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS).

It wasn’t just the curriculum that stood out, it was the energy of the students, the sense of curiosity in the room, and the clear potential for Mississippi’s future taking shape before our eyes.

For the second consecutive year, Jackson State University partnered with ExxonMobil and Rice University to bring the award-winning Tapia STEM camp to nearly 200 high school students from across Mississippi.

The 2025 Carbon STEM Summer Camp gave students entering grades 9–12 an immersive, week-long experience exploring science, technology, engineering and math — with a special focus on carbon capture and its critical role in a lower-carbon future.”
